In the footsteps of St.Brendan the Navigator (episode 1)

Submitted by admin on April 29, 2009 – 12:30 pmNo Comment

In this short series of videos the Turas team follow in the footsteps of St.Brendan the Navigator on his voyages from Ireland, to Iceland via Scotland and the Faroe Islands.

The team retrace a journey that Brendan is reputed to have undertaken in the 6th Century from Ireland to Iceland in a small oceangoing Boat.

This legendary journey was retraced by our team in 2008, kayaking off the Irish Coast, hiking and mountain biking in Ireland and Iceland, hiking and hill walking in the Faroe Islands, and and off-road driving in the rugged  interior highlands of Iceland.

This journey was also the subject of an excellent book by Tim Severin. Severin built a boat using only techniques and materials available in the sixth-century A.D, the time when  St Brendan was supposed to have sailed to America. The vessel comprised forty-nine ox hides stitched together in a patchwork and stretched over a wooden frame. This leather skin was only a quarter of an inch thick. Yet Severin and his crew sailed Brendan from Brandon Creek in Dingle to Newfoundland, surviving storms and a puncture from pack ice. “The Brendan Voyage” is Tim Severin’s dramatic account of their journey.
